Digital Shoreditch and the future of storytelling

May 31, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

Based in trendy Hackney House, this years’ Digital Shoreditch festival was packed with two weeks’ worth of talks about anything Digital, from companies looking for young talent, to innovation, marketing and gamification. It wouldn’t really be Shoreditch if they weren’t just a little bit quirky so every participant was invited to write on a board their name and who they would like to meet and had their photo taken. Photos were then hung on the “date wall” for networking. I […]

Holly and her team presenting during one of the Squared pitches

PHD UK at Squared 2012

May 24, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

Squared is a Google-led initiative, in partnership with Hyper Island and the IPA, to address the talent shortage in digital marketing. Holly David and Akhra Amin from PHD recently went on this course. Below is what Holly thought of the experience. She has also chronicled her time on the course here. The Squared course was a 7 week digital and media training course which was made up of lectures, seminars, workshops and 3 group projects (each project ended with pitching […]

Inspiration sessions: Innovation in the Modern Age

May 23, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

It seems like we just can’t get enough of the V & A! After visiting for the Hidden Heroes exhibition a few months ago we went back again last week to see the British Design 1948–2012: Innovation in the Modern Age exhibition, celebrating the best of British post-war art and design from the 1948 ‘Austerity Games’ to the present day. We walked through 3 different galleries each exploring the themes of tradition and modernity; the subversive impulse in British culture; and […]

Let me just log in to my TV – woops forgot my password, no MOTD for me tonight

May 18, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

Tuesday saw a motley crew from PHD head to Decipher’s iBurbia studios in Chiswick, passing Dara O’Briain on the High Street – we must be in tele-land! Kindly organised by ITV, we were immersed for an afternoon in the Living Room of Dreams, containing every piece of equipment known to man. Nigel Walley, MD of Decipher, was an engaging chap, full of the joys of TV. It is understandably difficult to condense his whole session down into a bite-sized blog […]

Worlds Collide

Strategies for a strategy

May 4, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

The APG pulled off what I thought of as a coup when I first heard about their most recent ‘Worlds Collide’ event: they got Jeremy Gilley, founder of Peace One Day, General Sir Mike Jackson, previously commander of the British Army, David Droga, founder of Sydney, Auckland and New York-based agency Droga5 and Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s Head of Communications and Strategy when he was in power, all on one stage, moderated by the very entertaining Rory Sutherland. It’s not […]

Harnessing advertising with connected TVs

May 4, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

Yesterday I was invited to join a panel discussion at the Connected TV World summit (conveniently held at the Royal Society of Medicine just down the road). The panel comprised Oli Newton (Head of Strategic Partnerships, Starcom MediaVest), Olivier Van Wynendaele (Senior Manager, Production Planning & Business Development, Toshiba Europe), Tom Wolfe, Senior Director, Advanced Advertising, Rovi),  Jon Block (Head of Commercial Innovation, ITV) and myself  and was chaired by Nigel Walley (MD of Decipher). The subject of our debate was ‘Harnessing Connected TV […]

Thoughts on the Participation Paradox

May 3, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

I mentioned a while ago that occasionally some of us get together to chat about planning-related issues of the day. Recently we debated Martin Weigel’s participation paradox, as put forth in his blog post. We discussed how penetration is a better campaign objective than loyalty when you consider the main objective of advertising is to sell. But we also discussed how it is important to remember that brands need to be able to generate ‘loyalty beyond reason’, as Kevin Roberts, CEO of […]

Planning 2020: The rise of the Moneyball Artist

May 3, 2012 by A Cup of Tea with PHD

In February, a few of us here at PHD put our heads together to come up with ideas we could put into an entry for WARC’s Admap Prize. Sadly, we didn’t make the shortlist, which was announced earlier this week, but we thought some of you may like to read what we finally submitted. Here goes. — Planning 2020: The rise of the Moneyball Artist In 2020, the role of technology and that of the client will be more tied to […]
